The Enfant Soleil Pavilion and emergency department: from dream to reality

February 6, 2026
Excerpt from the inaugural speech for the
Enfant Soleil Pavilion and emergency department
Today, we mark and celebrate the opening of the Enfant Soleil Pavilion and our new emergency department at the CHUS - Hôpital Fleurimont.

Inauguration with Minister of Health Sonia Bélanger
I am filled with such pride! This pavilion, which the people of the Eastern Townships have been waiting for for over two decades, represents much more than just infrastructure: it embodies the perseverance, collective vision, and unwavering commitment of our community.
I would like to thank the Government of Quebec, Opération Enfant Soleil, the CHUS Foundation, our partner through it all, as well as all the pioneers who believed in this project and everyone who has worked at our institution over the years.
On a more personal note, I would like to share my contribution throughout this project. For me, it has been an adventure that spanned a little over twenty years. I experienced every stage filled with hope, sometimes facing obstacles along the way. What pride to have achieved this together, as a team. I thank everyone who contributed to the project, near or far. You have my deepest gratitude.
Collectively, we are providing a new work environment for our teams for the well-being of the population. The Enfant Soleil Pavilion and the new emergency department will allow us to welcome our patients, young and old, with dignity, respect, and privacy. It will be a place of learning that will facilitate the transfer of our knowledge to those who are arriving and will write the next chapter of our story.
All that remains is to inhabit it, bring it to life, and above all, allow our teams to express all their talent, skills, and knowledge. It is now time to redefine the word "possible."
— Stéphane Tremblay, CEO, Santé Québec Estrie – CHUS

Every space has been designed to provide excellent care in a warm, human, and soothing environment.
Maternity

"We experienced the old maternity ward for Juliette’s birth and the new one for Charles’s. It’s so different and a much more pleasant space. It makes you want to be there!"
— Camille and Mathieu, parents of Juliette and Charles
Little Charles was in a bit of a hurry to make his debut! Active labor set in quickly, a week and a half ahead of schedule. "I arrived at the hospital and my contractions were already five minutes apart. Fortunately, it’s easy to find your way to the maternity ward," says Camille.
The room was welcoming, well-decorated, and modern, Camille notes, but the biggest advantage, according to her, is undoubtedly the private bathroom in the room. "In the old maternity ward, we sometimes had to wait our turn to take a bath or shower; we appreciated having access to one whenever we wanted. It’s much less complicated!" says Camille.
The comfort also made a difference for Mathieu, who was able to get a few hours of sleep. "The bed for dads was much more comfortable compared to when Juliette was born! Every detail makes a difference. We were comfortable and felt very welcome."
Neonatology

"We had a wonderful experience! It’s a calm and intimate space where the entire staff was incredibly supportive."
— Vaneska and Marc-Olivier, parents of Jeanne and Béatrice
Vaneska was admitted to the maternity ward a few days before her scheduled C-section, which took place in the obstetrical unit located on the same floor as the neonatal unit. Just a few steps away, everything was ready to welcome Jeanne and Béatrice into a private room, fully equipped to provide them with all the necessary care. Born at 33 weeks, the twins spent 25 and 27 days in the neonatal unit, respectively, before they were able to go home.
"The girls' room was private and comfortable; we could even sleep right by their bedside," says Vaneska. "What we also loved was having access to one of the seven accommodation rooms. A double bed, a sink, a shower nearby... it’s so appreciated! We would rotate with other parents who were also from out of town." The kitchenette with a fridge, oven, and storage cabinets made daily life easier for the couple during their long weeks at the hospital, as did the family areas for receiving visitors.
"Before you need them, you don't always realize the importance of all these investments. When you see the quality of the facilities and how competent the staff is, you quickly understand that it’s essential," concludes Marc-Olivier.

"The environment encourages parents to be involved with their baby; it’s much closer to the routine they will have at home."
— Virginie Ouellet, neonatal nurse
Virginie Ouellet says she has a true passion for neonatology, where she has been caring for little ones at the CHUS for three years. For her, one of the major benefits is that the new spaces allow parents to have a constant, private presence with their newborn.
"Sharing a room with their baby completely changes the experience for parents. They can be present at all times, and this proximity helps them gain confidence more quickly, whether it’s for breastfeeding or daily care. We also see positive effects on the babies' development!" explains Virginie, who encourages parents to also use the family lounge to connect and share with others. "We have more space to work and fulfill our role in educating parents."
Pediatrics

"Our work area is much more functional, and the families are so much better off!"
— Dr. Sophie Laflamme, pediatrician
After 27 years of practice at the CHUS, Dr. Sophie Laflamme has lost count of the number of children she has treated in the pediatric unit! Visiting them at their bedside is now a completely different experience compared to the old pediatric ward, where children and their parents had to share a cramped space.
"It’s night and day! Now, patients are either in private rooms or, if they share, the space is physically adapted for it. These private areas make a huge difference for confidentiality and for preventing the spread of infections, which is always a risk in pediatrics despite our incredible prevention team!" exclaims Dr. Laflamme. "It’s truly a space that fosters collaborative work and allows us to properly host students in medicine, nursing, and rehabilitation."

"The biggest difference is definitely the comfort! Our priority is for our child to be able to rest so he can get better, and we, as parents, really appreciated having a private space."
— Justine, Charles-Olivier’s mother
Charles-Olivier is only one year old, but he has already been hospitalized three times in the CHUS pediatric unit due to early-onset asthma, which requires hospital care whenever a cold or flu leads to breathing difficulties.
"Before, we were separated from other families by just a curtain. There was constant noise: monitors beeping, children crying, and even though the staff did their best to be discreet, we would overhear conversations that were sometimes heartbreaking. In the new unit, we had a private room with enough space to be comfortable... and even room to store the stroller and diaper bag!" says Justine. "You never want to have to go to the hospital with your child, but I can say it was a much better experience."

"It’s beautiful and functional. Our team is proud of our new unit!"
— Anne-Sophie Bouchard, pediatric clinical nurse
Anne-Sophie Bouchard, a pediatric nurse who works the evening shift, sees firsthand how the new facilities help families get the rest they need. "It changes everything! Parents and children are in their own family bubble, in a calm and private environment. Every space was designed with them in mind, and it makes our work so much easier."
For example, each room is equipped with the necessary tools to take vital signs, which was not the case before. "We save a huge amount of time! We also have rooms for minor procedures, which avoids a lot of moving around." A new communication system allows staff to locate each other quickly in these large spaces, while ensuring discreet and efficient exchanges.
Child psychiatry

"It’s reassuring for a parent to leave their child in such a bright and adapted environment. It’s a place for care, but also a living environment. I am impressed by the entire safety net surrounding my daughter."
— Catherine
Delphine, 16, had a well-thought-out plan to take her own life. The act was imminent. Alerted, her parents brought her to the Fleurimont emergency department, and the young girl was hospitalized for several weeks in child psychiatry. It was a true storm of emotions that hit the family. "You question yourself, you feel so helpless," says Catherine. "Entrusting your child to psychiatry is scary. However, I must say that it is very human at the CHUS, and the staff forms a reassuring safety net. The facilities are adapted to the children's interests. It’s a controlled environment, but they have choices."
The new spaces offer, among other things, an outdoor therapeutic courtyard, a large common area, a gym, a classroom, and a music room that is particularly appreciated by Delphine. "She started playing the guitar again. It’s a great way for her to calm down. It’s one of the many tools she is learning to quiet her mind."
Emergency

"We have space to work and the atmosphere is calmer. The emergency department was designed to provide more tranquility; it’s much more zen!"
— Dr. Audrey-Anne Turcotte-Brousseau, Chief of the Department of Emergency Medicine
The new emergency department offers major improvements for both staff and the people who need to visit. "We went from a 90s-era emergency department that was obsolete and dysfunctional to one that is more spacious, bright, and modern," explains Dr. Turcotte-Brousseau. "We might walk more in a day, but no one would want to go back!"
She points to the four resuscitation rooms as an example, which are side-by-side and standardized with the same equipment. "One night, I had four resuscitation cases simultaneously. The proximity and logistics allowed me to act efficiently in a space that was vast and comfortable for the entire team. I told myself we never could have succeeded in the old emergency department!" For patients, the benefits of the new emergency department are numerous. "The stretcher environment is designed to facilitate the team's work and offer more comfort and space for users as well. Being able to close doors instead of using curtains protects immunocompromised individuals and also reduces noise." Furthermore, no more intercom calls to reach staff! A new communication system now contributes to a calmer environment. The new facilities also include a sedation room where minor procedures can be performed and an isolation room to safely receive psychiatric patients.
"Everyone has their own bubble, their own workspace," concludes Dr. Turcotte-Brousseau. "The foundation of care is also the people who provide it."

Where do donations go?
Together, we are creating an environment where innovation, knowledge, and clinical excellence can truly flourish. Thanks to your commitment, impactful projects are coming to life to improve care, support the advancement of research, and foster an increasingly human and compassionate approach for patients and their loved ones. Every investment helps build cutting-edge academic medicine rooted in excellence.
High-impact projects
Thanks to the generosity of our donors and partners, every project we support helps make a real difference in the lives of those facing illness. Regardless of its size, every investment is guided by the same conviction: putting patients at the heart of everything we do to improve their care journey, today and for years to come. This same commitment to improving the health of our community is also reflected in our support for innovative research projects.
New funding to go further
The launch of the Pediatric Oncology Fund took place on November 6, 2025.
Bringing together many people touched by the cause, the CHUS Foundation announced its goal to raise $10M for this endowment fund to ensure the long-term sustainability of care for children with cancer treated at the Charles-Bruneau Pediatric Oncology Unit at Hôpital Fleurimont.
"Treating childhood cancer relies on research, which depends entirely on philanthropic donations. Thanks to our donors, we can offer young people in our region direct access to these treatments close to their families, avoiding the need to travel to Montreal or other centers."

95% of children now receive their treatments at the CHUS, compared to 25% just a few years ago.

Marie-Andrée and Charlotte, spokespersons for the Pediatric Oncology Fund
"Having access to care close to home makes a huge difference in Charlotte's life, but also in ours—for our mental health, our energy, and our finances." — Marie-Andrée, Charlotte's mom
The creation of this Fund was inspired by BRP and its employees, who announced a $1M donation at the launch, bringing their total contribution to pediatric oncology at the CHUS to $3M since 2018. We also thank Mr. Laurent Beaudoin, who enthusiastically joined BRP and its employees in supporting the fundraising efforts for the new Pediatric Oncology Fund.

The Agissons pour elles campaign benefiting the new Women’s Health Fund was launched on March 9, 2026.
Issues specific to women’s health have long been ignored, misunderstood, or left without answers, which can impact their quality of life. The campaign aims to raise $3 million, which will be dedicated to research, clinical improvements, and funding awareness and prevention activities for women of all generations.
"With this fund, we truly have a global vision of women’s health. Yes, there are gynecological and hormonal issues, but also chronic, neurological, or cardiovascular diseases that present differently in women. There is a significant knowledge gap to be filled through research and a lot of misinformation to counter in order to better equip women, no matter what stage of life they are in."

"When you live with pain, without knowing the cause or the solutions, your mental health is also affected. I’ve been there, and that’s why I find it important to get involved with the Fund. I want women’s health to become a collective priority."

For the future of care
What if paralysis were no longer permanent? For the team led by neurosurgeon Christian Iorio-Morin, professor and researcher at the Université de Sherbrooke and chairholder of the Research Chair in Neurological Restoration, this question paves the way for breakthroughs that could transform lives.
This project is unique in Canada and opens up promising prospects for people affected by neurological conditions. By financially supporting this new research chair in collaboration with the Université de Sherbrooke, the CHUS Foundation reaffirms its commitment to medical innovation.

"Our goal is to create a system that can directly activate an individual's spinal cord, nerves, and muscles to restore voluntary movement in a paralyzed limb. We are looking to bypass central nervous system lesions using electrodes and neurostimulation devices. The concept itself is simple, but its execution is an immense challenge that requires innovation on many levels. Our team is composed of, among others, surgeons, nurses, physiotherapists, kinesiologists, neuroscientists, engineers, physicists, legal experts, and ethicists. This interdisciplinarity is fundamental and essential to the project's success."

As high-risk pregnancies become increasingly common in Canada, it is important to better understand the factors that influence the health of mothers and their babies. Maternal aging, the rise in chronic diseases, mental health issues, and multiple environmental exposures are profoundly transforming the perinatal landscape.
The new research chair, led by Dr. Annie Ouellet, will focus on the factors that influence women's health during pregnancy as well as their baby's development. Her team will analyze several complementary sources of information: advanced medical imaging, biological markers, and observations gathered during clinical follow-ups.
The knowledge generated by this chair will help better address the specific needs of each patient and provide more personalized pregnancy care, tailored to the realities of women and families. The work will also contribute to improving access to care and reducing inequalities in how it is delivered.

"As a tenured professor for the next five years, I fully intend to advance the work of this Chair with my incredible team. Data and publications will follow, as will the growing recruitment of patients, which will allow us to generate concrete answers. This Chair has real momentum, and the research structure will endure over time."

The arrival of a new Gamma Knife in 2026 ensures the continuity of a cutting-edge service offered to patients in Estrie, as well as those from across Quebec and Eastern Canada. Since 2004, the CHUS has been the only facility in Quebec to have such a device, which treats tumors and other lesions requiring delicate intervention. By using gamma rays, the procedure is less invasive and helps avoid long courses of radiation therapy or surgery.
Thanks to this equipment, people with cancer or other lesions are seeing an improvement in their quality of life and the preservation of their neurological functions.
"The new Gamma Knife allows us to treat much larger tumors or those located near critical structures. With the scanner integrated into the device, it is possible to fractionate the treatment over several days with the same level of precision, while enhancing patient comfort. We now have more options and are treating more people every week."

We would like to thank Francis and Pierre-Olivier Dufresne, TFI International, La Caisse, and the Pellerin-Trudel family for their contribution to this significant investment.
A new milestone has been reached in prostate cancer diagnosis with the acquisition of an MRI-ultrasound fusion system. This technology allows for more precise identification of suspicious areas and more targeted biopsies. By improving diagnostic quality, it increases the chances of early detection of lesions requiring intervention while reducing unnecessary sampling. In the Estrie region alone, approximately 1,600 prostate biopsies are performed each year.
This advancement is particularly important as prostate cancer remains the most frequently diagnosed cancer in men in Canada. It is estimated that one in nine men will receive a diagnosis in their lifetime.
Thanks to the generosity of donors to the CHUS Foundation’s Men’s Health Fund, the hospital was able to acquire this state-of-the-art equipment.

"Given our aging population and the rising prevalence of urological cancers, it is reasonable to expect that a significant proportion of patients evaluated for prostate cancer could benefit from these advanced approaches. In our setting, we estimate that nearly 25 to 30% of patients eligible for a prostate biopsy could benefit from an MRI-ultrasound fusion-guided biopsy, thereby optimizing the detection of clinically significant cancers while reducing unnecessary procedures."

Since August 2025, people living with diabetes who are experiencing financial difficulties have had access to a foot care and adapted therapeutic footwear program.
This care is essential for preventing diabetes-related complications. This entire project embodies a concrete gesture of solidarity toward people who are in great need.
"For many of our patients, these services represent a significant financial challenge, as they are generally not covered by any public insurance plan. Your donation has a concrete impact on their health, mobility, and quality of life. By contributing to the prevention of diabetic foot complications, you are truly making a difference in the daily lives of particularly vulnerable individuals."

We are grateful to the John R. McConnell Foundation, whose donation made this new program possible.
Inspiring collaborations
The Fondation du CHUS and the Grand défi Pierre Lavoie Foundation are joining forces to fund research projects on rare diseases.
In this first year of collaboration, two research projects received support from the Financial Assistance Program for Innovation (PAFI) – Rare Diseases, including the one presented by professor-researcher Pierre-Luc Boudreault, a researcher at the CHUS Research Centre, the Institute for Research on Cancer, and the Sherbrooke Institute of Pharmacology.
Drawing on his expertise in medicinal chemistry, he seeks to develop molecules that will target the receptors of glioblastoma multiforme, a rare and aggressive brain cancer that affects four out of 100,000 people per year. Currently, there are no treatment options for those affected by this form of cancer. The goal of the research is to develop a medication capable of slowing tumor growth with as few side effects as possible. The laboratories of Professor Philippe Sarret, a neuroscience specialist, and Dr. David Fortin, a neurosurgeon and neuro-oncologist, will also be involved in testing the molecules that will make up the future drug.
"The support from the PAFI allows us to validate our hypotheses and obtain preliminary results, which we can then use to convince other funding agencies to continue supporting the research. It acts as a lever, like a spark plug. The knowledge gained could also contribute to the advancement of new therapeutic approaches for other types of cancer."

The Fondation du CHUS and the Fondation du Centre jeunesse de l’Estrie have announced a partnership with BRP and its employees aimed at supporting youth under the care of the Youth Protection Department (DPJ), who are too often victims of bullying.
Thanks to a $500,000 commitment from BRP and its employees, hundreds of young people will be supported by the Fondation du Centre jeunesse de l’Estrie, which will address various factors that increase the risks of bullying, rejection, and social isolation. BRP’s outgoing President and CEO, Mr. José Boisjoli, joined BRP and its employees by personally contributing to the funding of this important initiative. BRP also donated clothing.
The impacts of bullying are well-documented: anxiety, chronic stress, sleep disorders, isolation, school dropout, and mental health issues that can leave a lasting mark on a person's life. Youth supported by the DPJ, already vulnerable due to neglect, instability, or poverty, are particularly at risk when these realities are compounded by stigma and a lack of resources.

"BRP and its employees are important allies for the health of our community and long-time partners of the CHUS Foundation. I want to sincerely thank them for maintaining their commitment and supporting these young people whose journeys are filled with obstacles. Together, we are contributing to this important project that focuses on prevention. It is a great example of collaboration between foundations, in line with our desire to take part in actions that can prevent an escalation toward more serious health problems."

Thanks to a donation and the collaboration of the Council of Physicians, Dentists, Pharmacists, and Midwives (CMDPSF – CHUS), mobile carts designed to hold about twenty computer workstations have been distributed to several units at Hôpital Fleurimont and Hôtel-Dieu de Sherbrooke.
Simple yet essential equipment to support data computerization and bring efficiency and flexibility to clinical teams in their work organization.

Together in action!
Our community is more than just strength in numbers; it is the strength of commitment that transforms lives! For every flagship event of the CHUS Foundation, and for every fundraiser held by individuals or businesses, there is a desire to contribute to a cause greater than oneself. Thank you for giving your time, participating, encouraging others, and showing such generosity.
Bringing people together
Once again this year, our events achieved memorable results that allow us to do more for the health of the people of Estrie. Participants, organizing committees, and partners are the cornerstone of all these successes. A million thanks!

Committed Butterfly Initiatives
A collection of actions that, when combined, bring a wave of kindness and an unwavering commitment to doing more for health. This is exactly what drives every Butterfly Initiative!
To highlight the importance of these fundraising activities, the CHUS Foundation has created a unique visual identity this year for Butterfly Initiatives and offers support to those who need assistance in carrying out their fundraising projects. Whether they are patients, loved ones of those who have received care, or simply people committed to mobilizing their community to give back to the CHUS, either for a single activity or over the long term.
The beauty of the butterfly effect is that surge of generosity that spreads from one person to another. We are so lucky! Here are a few of these heartfelt gestures.

Anick, one step at a time...
and thousands more!
Anick Nadeau-Fréchette had to relearn how to walk, and now she is running and doing her part to improve healthcare!
At the age of 18, Guillain-Barré syndrome struck her down, stripping her of all muscle strength from head to toe. Two years later, she set out to run 60 kilometers to thank the team that cared for her in the CHUS intensive care unit, where she spent 60 long days.
Giving up was never an option for the young woman, despite a long rehabilitation. Each kilometer of this run represents a day of hospitalization where Anick showed resilience and courage.
Every dollar raised was donated to the CHUS intensive care unit, for a total of $9,540.
Encouraged by those around her throughout the journey, Anick successfully completed her six-hour run on July 26, 2025, under a scorching sun and poor air quality—neither of which could dampen her big smile at being active again.
… and other examples of inspiring initiatives!

Two new activities were launched this year, organized by the CHUS Foundation's Youth Committee. Roule pour le CHUS and Spin pour le CHUS invite you to pedal and raise funds in a festive, family-friendly atmosphere! One kicked off at Parc Jacques-Cartier in Sherbrooke in the fall, and the other was held at SomaStudio in the spring. Thank you to everyone who hopped on their bikes for a great cause!

In May 2025, Catherine Bisson received a life-altering diagnosis: a grade II astrocytoma, a type of brain cancer.
"Through this ordeal, I chose to fight. My goal: to support the CHUS Foundation, specifically the Cœur en tête Fund initiative, led by Dr. David Fortin, a passionate neurosurgeon and neuro-oncologist. As a spouse and mother of three young children aged 6, 5, and 3, I want to show them that the impossible is always possible."
She chose to collect refundable cans and bottles to support research, and her call was answered! 175,000 containers were collected.

Jean-Pierre Tardif and his son Nathan took on an exceptional challenge: participating in the Ironman Copenhagen in Denmark in August 2025 and raising funds for radiation oncology at the CHUS.
3.8 kilometers of swimming, 180 kilometers of cycling, and 42.1 kilometers of running each, for a total of 452.6 km between the two of them! "This physical and mental test reflects our determination to achieve more than just a sports performance. My father was treated in the radiation oncology department at the CHUS for an entire summer. Thanks to that care, he was able to extend his life by two years—precious years during which we were able to tell him we love him again and again." – Jean-Pierre

This is a must-attend event that is now in its fifth year! 900 people took on the 24-hour relay challenge on skis, snowboards, or alpine touring gear at Mont-Orford.
About a hundred walkers took part in the new WALK YOUR LIFE challenge, and children under 14 were also able to take on their own challenge on the family track.
For the first time, the event surpassed the $400,000 mark in funds raised! The proceeds are donated to six local organizations.

Every year, March becomes "Baby Plant Month" for horticulturist Mélanie Grégoire, whose son, Laurent, was born prematurely and treated at the CHUS. Her initiative is growing across Quebec, where she donates the proceeds from plant sales to neonatal departments and research in several regions, including Sherbrooke.
Since the initiative began in 2021, the total amount donated to the cause has reached one million dollars!

For 25 years, the CHUS employee theater troupe has been dedicated to making audiences laugh for a good cause, and this year was no exception! Hot pink dazzled the stage for the play Les Girls, an adaptation inspired by Les Boys, written and directed by Stéphane Baillargeon. While women's hockey is growing in popularity, the play performed by the troupe—composed largely of healthcare staff—also delivered great moments of hilarity and emotion! Thanks to three nights of performances, $27,500 was raised to support healthcare at the CHUS.

The Bishop’s University Gaiters women’s hockey team cares deeply about children’s health. That is why they invited the CHUS Foundation to their January 16th game to hold a 50/50 draw and a bake sale, with all proceeds donated to the CHUS pediatric department. These Canadian university women’s hockey champions also visited children in the pediatric and pediatric oncology wards.

La Shoppe SaladeBar – a bowl of generosity!
Since opening in Sherbrooke in June 2025, La Shoppe SaladeBar has featured a philanthropic bowl on its menu. For every "Croque au thon" salad sold, $2 is donated to the CHUS Foundation. For the owner, Lydia Giguère, it was only natural for her business to make such a commitment. It is her way of thanking the CHUS staff who saved her child, born prematurely at 23 weeks.
"Édouard was tiny, unable to breathe on his own. I was in shock. For 113 days, he was hospitalized in the neonatal unit, and we had to take turns being near him, taking care of our 14-month-old daughter, and dealing with the stress of managing my business. Thanks to the care and incredible support of the hospital team, he is here today!"
Édouard is doing well and attends daycare just like other children his age. For Lydia, this miracle is a source of immense gratitude, and by sharing her story, she hopes to give hope to families of premature babies and enable her business to raise funds to support the CHUS and access to specialized care.

A Tuesday of generosity
GivingTuesday is a global movement where, for one day, generosity takes center stage between Black Friday and holiday shopping.
On December 2, 2025, the movement was truly felt at the CHUS Foundation. Thanks to Immex Société Immobilière and the Société des médecins de l’Université de Sherbrooke, who matched donations, this day raised $103,278.
Thank you to everyone who made this Tuesday a memorable day!

Thank you to our volunteers for teaming up with us!
Volunteers are at the heart of our mission. Their backgrounds are varied, but they all share a desire to make a concrete difference in their community. Through their time, energy, and commitment, these dedicated individuals help advance projects that improve care and the patient experience in the region.
Their presence is invaluable to achieving our mission, whether by supporting us during our fundraising events, organizing fundraisers, serving on the board of directors, getting involved in committees, selling raffle tickets, or contributing to numerous daily tasks.
Every gesture counts, and the sum of everyone's efforts helps build a healthier, more humane, and more supportive future.
A huge thank you!
More than 300 volunteers generously donated their time to the CHUS in 2025-2026.
Guylaine Bergeron: A commitment that changes lives
Some people choose to give back because they believe in a cause. Others do it because they deeply understand the impact a single gesture can have. Guylaine’s motivation encompasses both. The former teacher comes to the CHUS Foundation office several days a week to support the team with various tasks. Whether it’s updating the database or making phone calls to donors, she accepts every task with a smile.
"The CHUS Foundation is tattooed on my heart."
Her involvement is also rooted in her own experience. A few years ago, she spent three months at Hôtel-Dieu.
"I was hospitalized due to mental health issues. It’s a daily battle," Guylaine confides. "I was able to see the many needs on the unit. I asked myself how I could help improve the patients' daily lives." This reflection became the starting point for a remarkable commitment.
In addition to donating her time, Guylaine chose to share part of an inheritance she received to support the psychiatry unit at Hôtel-Dieu. She met with the team to learn about their needs, and among her favorite projects is the new Snoezelen-style sensory room, which is now accessible. This warm and soothing space was designed to offer a moment of respite, promote relaxation, and help hospitalized patients reconnect with the present moment.
For Guylaine, this project demonstrates the importance of investing in initiatives that leave a lasting impact. Her support also made it possible to equip the unit with comfortable chairs and items for cooking workshops and leisure activities, helping to create spaces that feel different from a traditional hospital environment.
A donor when she can and a volunteer every day (or almost!), Guylaine stands out for her generosity and her desire to take concrete action. Her journey is an inspiring reminder that even the most difficult challenges can fuel the drive to give back and make a difference.
The CHUS Foundation is privileged to have such a committed ally.

Giving, at the heart of the Lamarre family's values
In the Lamarre family, philanthropy represents much more than an act of generosity: it is a value passed down from one generation to the next.
When Guy and Marie Lamarre settled in the Eastern Townships in 2011, they immediately fell in love with the region. For this couple, who had recently arrived from Montreal, it was only natural to get involved in their new community.
We come from a modest background, but we were lucky enough to be very successful, says Marie Lamarre. I find it important to share, and I have instilled this value in our son, adds Guy Lamarre, with a hint of pride in his eyes. A few years ago, Dominic took over from his father in managing the family foundation, which supports numerous organizations in various fields, including healthcare. It is a field we know well, emphasizes Mr. Lamarre. My son and I are chemists, and I owned a pharmaceutical company. The cause of health has been close to our hearts for a long time. We used to donate in the Montreal area, but upon arriving here, I told myself: I am going to donate to the CHUS.

Over the years, the Lamarre family's commitment has helped support several initiatives at the CHUS, whether in angiography, cardiology, or pediatrics. These numerous contributions have had concrete impacts for thousands of patients in the Eastern Townships. These tangible results reinforce the family's desire to continue their involvement in order to increase access to the expertise developed at the CHUS and to contribute to the growth of the next generation of doctors and researchers.
The goal is to keep them here afterward. For that, they need to have opportunities, believes Guy Lamarre.
Giving back to help their community remains the Lamarre family's primary motivation. Sensitive to different realities and pressing needs, the family members have developed a sense of sharing and a deep attachment to their adopted region. Whether through significant donations or participation in fundraising activities, such as the Foundation's golf tournament, which they have attended for about a decade, the Lamarre family demonstrates that philanthropy can take many forms to build a more supportive community. Dominic even volunteers a few hours from time to time, and in turn, he wishes to pass on to his son the values he inherited from his parents.
We are trying to teach him the importance of gratitude and generosity. Even though he is still young, at 7 years old, we want him to understand that every action can make a difference, concludes Dominic Lamarre.

The CHUS Foundation, close to you!
Being close to you means being present for the moments that matter. Throughout the year, the CHUS Foundation creates many opportunities to connect with the community, care teams, and patients. Because beyond the projects we fund, it is human relationships that give our mission its true meaning.

Thank You Day, on January 11, is an opportunity for the entire CHUS Foundation team, joined by volunteers, doctors, and patients, to pick up the phone and express their gratitude.
More than 1,200 donors, partners, volunteers, and event committee members received a quick phone call. We also met with CHUS staff to thank them for being there for patients every single day. A wonderful day of appreciation!
A special thank you to Chocolat Lamontagne for the chocolate treats!

After 50 years of service and with few successors available, the CHUS volunteer auxiliaries handed over the Hôtel-Dieu shop to the CHUS Foundation team on October 1st, 2025. "It is with great respect that we take over the management of the shop and continue the mission of the auxiliaries," said Martin Clermont, Executive Director of the CHUS Foundation.
All proceeds from the shop will go toward projects aimed at improving the patient experience.
