Bertrand Hould's lectures

Community initiatives

During the Clipper Race Round the world 2019-2020, Bertrand Hould had the idea to raise $1 for each kilometer traveled in order to support the Fonds Coeur en tête and brain cancer research in Dr. David Fortin's laboratory at the CIUSSS de l'Estrie — CHUS. Now, Bertrand is offering conferences in order to tell his adventure and his story.

Bertrand Hould, a man in his sixties from Drummondville, has started a sailing race around the world, the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race 2019-2022. For a year, he lived on a 70-foot boat, with 23 other people in a tight space and, for the most part, soaked. This extreme adventure is Everest from the sea, with 75,000 km to go, while twelve boats fight each other. Few people aged 60 have achieved this feat. But for Bertrand Hould, this perilous adventure is above all a way of paying tribute to his spouse who died as a result of brain cancer.

“I wanted to take up this challenge to pay tribute to my wife. It was important for me to find a reason for being, to put my energy where I had power. Adversity can strike anyone,” philosophizes the ex-teacher. “I realized that an unfortunate event can lead to happy events that would otherwise never have happened.”

Leaving London on September 1, 2019 to take up the challenge of a year-long race of 11 sailboats around the world (The Clipper Race), Bertrand Hould's adventure came to an abrupt end on March 17, 2020. The arrival of the pandemic in March 2020 interrupted the race in the Philippines until it resumed in March 2022. After a major break and an almost insurmountable delay, the Qindao crew finally won the prestigious Clipper Race Round the World Cup on July 30 in London. Bertrand Hould also won the honorary award from the city of Derry, in Northern Ireland. The “Spirit of a Derry Girls Award,” a name inspired by a popular television show, is an award given to a crew member designated by their peers in recognition of their contribution, team spirit, and approach to life.

It is also a message of perseverance that he wants to transmit during conferences in schools or others to tell his story. Writing a book is also part of his plans and the profits from all these activities will be donated to the Cœur en Tête fund to support Dr. Fortin's research.

The adventure of Mr. Hould in a few figures...

  • 249 days at sea
  • 1,677 hours of navigation at night
  • 17 seas and oceans, totalling twice the distance around the globe
  • 102 circumnavigators registered out of 700 participants, 41 completed the race
  • His goal: to donate $1 for each kilometer sailed, or 87,237 km

Following the death of his partner Denise, who shared his life for thirty years, Bertrand Hould set up a fundraiser that took the form of a sailing race around the world to support research on brain cancers in the laboratory of the neurosurgeon and neuro-oncologist Dr. David Fortin.

Bertrand is now sharing his story through free conferences in exchange for voluntary donations to support this same cause. After a recent conference at Mitchel Lincoln, he was presented with a check for $5,000.

If you would like to welcome him to hear his inspiring story in your establishment or business, do not hesitate to contact him at berthould@gmail.com, or on his page Bertrand Hould - Clipper 2019-22!
