The Foundation

Background

The Fondation du Centre hospitalier universitaire de Sherbrooke (CHUS Foundation) as it currently exists was officially created on July 1, 1995, merging the original Fondation du Centre hospitalier universitaire de Sherbrooke with the Fondation des Amis de l'Hôtel-Dieu and the Fondation du Centre hospitalier Saint-Vincent-de-Paul. This amalgamation took place in the wake of the major reorganization of health services in the Eastern Townships.

The CHUS Foundation, although relatively new to the scene, has solid roots in the Eastern Townships community. The work carried out by the three original hospital foundations over the 20 years prior to the launch of the present foundation was backed by more than 50 000 donors.

The constant support of the Eastern Townships business community speaks to the importance played by the Foundation at the regional level.

The CHUS Foundation is an independent, non-profit philanthropic organization that serves as a privileged partner in the advancement and development of the CHUS.

Since its incorporation in 1977, the CHUS Foundation has strived to meet the day-to-day needs of the hospital centre in terms of acquiring state-of-the-art medical equipment, conducting research, implementing new development programs and updating existing ones.

Mission

The Foundation’s primary mission is to raise funds through various activities, administer those funds and prioritize them according to the needs of the more than 1 million people living in the territory served by Sherbrooke’s university hospital: the Centre hospitalier universitaire de Sherbrooke.

The CHUS Foundation is a direct link between donors and the hospital centre. Each year the CHUS Foundation allocates substantial sums to medical research, new medical equipment, and training for medical staff.

The Foundation is also committed to promoting and supporting any internal initiative of a human or material nature that is helpful in providing diagnostic and therapeutic services to CHUS patients.

Supporting the CHUS Foundation’s work enables our community of more than 1 million to be in better health.

Projects

Over the next few years, the CHUS will have to address a number of challenges requiring major investments. The CHUS’ Board of Directors has adopted a five-year (2006-2010) strategic plan to carry out the various projects involved.

Faced with these large-scale challenges and needs, the CHUS Foundation will have to redouble its efforts. In these difficult financial times, it will have to be creative, imaginative and innovative in developing and implementing its fundraising projects.
